Among the 116 Nair communities in Travancore, Vilakkithala Nairs have the largest population. They were Royal Brahmin Servants. The traditional profession of the Vilakkithala Nairs was medical treatment.
.(Vlakitthalarayar, Vlakittharavan, Vlakitthalavan) These three communities are not related to the Vilakktthala Nair community who practice traditional medicine.
“They were known as palace physicians”.
Padmanabhapuram Palace in Travancore, Kavatiyar Palace in Thiruvananthapuram, Thekkenkoor Palace in Kottayam, the important physicians were Vilakkithala Nairs. Palace Physicians are like Appavu Vaidyan (Neelakanthan Narayan), Paediatrician, Raman Vaidyan (ophthalmologist) etc. are just examples to mention.
Being a section related to the palace, this community was not forbidden anywhere in the Temples, in traveling on public roads, in changing clothes, or in studying the Vedas. But Shudrer’s should not learn the Vedas and if he hears it, lead should be melted in his ears. It is a big question that needs to be answered as to which Nairs of the Nair sect Chattambiswamy had to write his Vedic review.
It can be understood from the Thiruvithamkur Palace records that the Vilakkithala Nair community worked in the Travancore Nair army and along with the various Nair communities. But many of the more than 30 other Nair communities were not allowed freedom of movement on public roads or Temple entry, it can be understood by studying the actual history.
And it was the result of intense experiences, neglect and oppression from the upper class Brahmins and Namboothiris that motivated Mannath Padmanabhan to Form an Organization called NSS in 1914.
Nair was not a caste
Being just a title along with the caste, the idea of Mannathupadmanabhan, Shadananan Nair and C. Krishna Pillai abolished the sub-caste system and worked for the unification of about 116 Nair castes and achieved success to some extent.
He played an equal part with the sub-divisions of the Nair sect done
A petition was made to the foreign government to make the “Chuttaran” or Shudra community, as it was locally known, Nair, and the Nair Regulation was substituted for the Shudra Regulation.
and caste differences among the Nair caste he preached not to.
Moreover, the Nair Service Society or NSS proposed by scholar K Paramupilla had a low membership as only the Nair castes who could be counted on the fingers out of a total of 116 Nair castes. Therefore, Mannath was convinced of the need to change the difference between Pramani Nair and normal Nair. Hence he declared that there were 116 Nair castes and no distinction.
But it was Shadananan Nair who created history by presenting the resolution of the Nair Unification Conference held in Thiruvananthapuram in 1904.
It is a historical fact that various Nair organizations had to take part in the temple entry announcement in 1936.

Vilakkithala Nair “Organisation”.
Shadananan Nair (Shadananaswamikal) and C.Krishna Pillai, son of Chandrananan Nair, who was born in Kalkulam, a part of South Travancore, worked with the aim of erasing the discord and immorality of the Nair groups, uniting around 116 Nair groups, eliminating the sub-caste system of the Nair groups, and making a single Nair caste.
Then Shadanan Nair through his magazine Samudaya Ranjini and C Krishna Pillai through his magazine Samudaya Parishkarini worked for unification. Shadanan Nair is famous as an Astrologer, a Member of the Sri Moolam Praja Sabha and a Malayalam linguist.
And in the “Malayali Memorial”, a petition given to the Maharaja on January 1, 1891, its originator, Barrister GK Pillai, Dr. Palpu, KP Shankara Menon, C.V. Raman Pillai, Kavalamneelakanthanpillai, C. Krishna Pillai, along with KC Shadananan Nair, collected 10028 signatures and gave it to the Maharaja.
This is something that the Vilakkithala Nair community can always be proud of. The main demand in this petition was to give importance to Malayalees in high official positions in Travancore. Also, to give priority to natives in jobs without caste-religion considerations and to give proportional predominance in appointments were the main demands of the Malayali Memorial.
The Vilakkithala Nair community had the highest number of nominated MLAs in the Shri Moolam Praja Sabha.
- Shadananan Nair
- Narayanan Neelakandan (Appavu Vydyan)
- Kallada Narayan Nair
“Shadananan Nair”
The Maharaja was convinced of the poverty-stricken condition of his own community at that time, and demanded that the students of his community be given the same fees and scholarships as those given to the Muhammadans. And he has produced many proofs before the Maharaja that, barber means a profession and that his community is not barber, but our community is a Vilakithala Nair.
He also requested that the women of his community are midwives and the men are physicians and that they should be given more expertise in this field and that they should be given the opportunity to study Allopathy, a modern medicine that was popular at that time, in their own country and abroad.

Also, it has been demanded that Hospitals, Police Stations/Courts, Schools should be newly established, old ones should be renovated, Markets and Canals should be afforested. “The Diwan’s reply to all this is remarkable”.
But the death of Heavenly Shadananan is very mysterious and full of wonder. The mystery increases when his relatives testify that he died in 1959 and where he died and that his properties were shared by his relatives.
The fact that, he was no children / wife, that the society or family members did not know that a very famous person had died, or that they did not know where the body was hidden is a cause for many doubts. According to the law, if there is no wife or children, and if the property of a very famous person is to be shared a lot of legal procedures must be followed. Shadananan also worked in the “Purushartha Sevinisabha”, which was started by Thirthapadaswamikal, the first disciple of Chattambiswamis. But some people are hiding many stories of Shadanan., Shadanan Nair, who was unmarried and Master of the Divine art of Astrology, was with other astrologers at the age of 17 in his Rajasabha during Visakham Thirunaal.
It is said that whenever the king went out, king would secretly inquire through which door he would go out today, and when he returned, he would give gold coins and other gifts to the astrologers who answered correctly. One day, the king decided to put all the astrologers to a test, and on that day he cut down the fort and went out, he came back and read the notes written by all the astrologers together, But, Shadananan wrote that Thirumanas would cut down the fort and go out today and was kept in his horse-drawn carriage. this was the history. That is how, the cut and cut fort came into existence (this history and the description given by my relative Shri Ramesh). and in the Google also)
Heavenly Shadanana Swami was a yogi who would have given whatever gift he received from the royal palace to Devasam and the poor people.. He lived and died like a yogi without even leading a married life.
“Palace Physician Appavu Vydyar (Narayanan Neelakandan).
Similarly, Narayanan Neelakandan Appau Vaidyan, who was a palace physician, North Kerala Vilakkithalanair Mahayoga leader, Sri Moolam Praja Sabha member and Sanskrit scholar.
He was born S/O Narayanan Vaidyar and Parvathi Amma in 1886 November 27th at Kottayam Chalukunn in Palayam Bhawan, After completing his primary education, Neelakandan, who was highly skilled in Ayurveda and pediatric treatment, studied Sanskrit under the tutelage of Thakitiel Mathanashan, a Sanskrit scholar in a village near the suburbs of Kottayam called Olasha, and then studied Sanskrit under Subramannian Potti, a renowned scholar and poet, at the Pai Vallikal Math.In addition, he learned Ashtanga Hridayam and Ashtanga Samgraha from Pandalam Krishnavaryar, who had profound knowledge of Ayurveda and Sanskrit. Later, He then practiced medicine along with his father in a literary manner and had a large group of disciples.

HISTORY
In Thali, where the king was ruling Southenkoor, on the instructions of a yogi from Madurai who had Siddhi, Narayanan, who knew Chinthamani medicine, brought the doctors/vydyan to the palace to treat the queen. At a time when the non-castes could not even walk on the path of the king, the king gave the place closest to the palace to the “Vaidya Kudumbam”. It should be understood from this that the Nair community of Valakithala was not untouchables.
History is that when it comes to royal needs, there was a bow cart, a conch with the royal seal a staff and a physician. The name of Appavu Vaidyan(Narayanan Neelakandan) can be found in many Sanskrit texts related to Ayurveda. “Shrimoolampraja” in the congregation*.
Appav Vaidyan, who was always concerned about the Vilakkithalanair community and its members, once submitted a petition to the Diwan of Travancore on behalf of the basic castes of the community. Accepting the petition, the reply given by the Diwan was as follows!! I had never thought that Reverend Appavu Vaidyer and Vilakkithala Nair were “Farmers”.
Until now I thought they were engaged in one or two fixed occupations. I say it absolutely. So what they all need is not agricultural land, but a place to live. You say that twenty-seven thousand lamp-headed dogs have no land of their own. So it would be a serious problem to provide 10 cents of land to each person, i.e. to provide 27000 acres of land, where can we find that much land?
Separation of castes*
- Vilakkithalanair
- Vilakkithalarayer
- Vilakkitharavan
- Vilakkithalavan
The other three communities are not related to the Vilakkithal Nair community who are traditional family practitioners of medicine.i.e (Vilakkithalarayar, Vilakkitharavan & Vilakkithalavan)
The clan occupation of the remaining three communities are barbering i.e (Vilakkithalarayar, Vilakkitharavan & Vilakkithalavan) they live in Palakkad parts and other northern districts and are very small in population
“KURUPPANS”
Kongini barbers are called Kuruppans
What is Ambittan?
(Ambishthan is a Sanskrit word)
Ambitan means the priests and barbers of the Kammals, in Manusmriti it is said that they were born to a Brahmin from a Vaishya woman, and their traditional profession is barbering. They are also mentioned in the legends of Kerala origin.Being a caste related to the palace, this community was not forbidden anywhere in temples or in traveling on public roads, in changing clothes, or in studying the Vedas.
Similarly, if we say barbers, they are those who have traditionally practiced barbering in the clan, that is, Kavuthiya, Pandithar, Ezhavathi, Maruthuvar Ostan (Muslim) Vilakkithalavan, Vilakkitharavan, Vilakkithalarayar..
But in the modern era, the same profession is being practiced by the communities from Nambootiri to Nayadi as a profession, similarly the Nair community of Vilakkithala Nair is also doing it as a profession.
The history of the Vilakkithala Nair community, which was unknown to anyone and even their own family members did not try to highlight it, was informed to the world about the history of the Vilakkithala Nair community, which has been working silently since 2012 and in 2020, an organization called the Vilakkithala Nair Sabha with registration number 274/20, headed by Shri Sureshkunneth. For the first time, Acharya days are being organized through Malayalam-English newspapers and visual media, with the name of Acharya Smriti Sagaram as Flag Day, November 1st as Shadanana Day and November 27th as Appavu Vaidyan Day. Apart from this, awards are given to the prominent ones including Padma Shri in their name and Acharya Appavu Vaidyanshadanana Swamy Charitable Trust is formed to help the poor of the community.
